Job Description


Position Summary

This position will primarily be responsible for providing accurate geological information to the mine planning, geotechnical engineering, and mine/plant operations groups of the Horizon Oil Sands Project. As a team member of the Mine Geology group, the geologist will participate in a broad range of geological disciplines.


Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:


Conduct detailed geological interpretations and mapping of the Cretaceous and Pleistocene deposits within the Horizon Project leases.

Create distribution maps and graphs to communicate critical oil sand properties and geology for mine planning/operations, tailings planning and bitumen production operations.

Work with the geotechnical group and overburden removal contractor to assist with material classifications and construction utilization.

Set up and manage QA/QC programs for the various analyses of oil sand samples from annual exploration programs.

Assist with the planning and implementation of on site geological investigations as required to advance the development of the Horizon Project and improve the geological model and overall operations.


Specific qualifications include:


A degree in Geo-Sciences plus experience in sedimentary geology, preferably in Oil Sands.

Previous mining experience would be an asset.

Familiarity with the geology of the Athabasca Region.

Mapping, database, GIS and/or geological modeling skills would be an asset.

Must be a self-starter with a strong ability to work with minimal supervision and to meet tight, short duration project deadlines.


This is a rare opportunity to be involved with the startup and initial development of a multi-billion dollar mega project. The Mine Geology group is a multi-function group with many opportunities for cross training and educational/skill development.


T he location of this position is in Fort McMurray .

Description

Located in Calgary, Alberta and reporting to the Manager, Elmworth (Geology & Geophysics) the successful candidate for this position will be required to provide all levels of petrophysical support in an active drilling area for the Deep Basin, Elmworth Asset Team.

Responsibilities

Providing support to the Asset Team’s Geologists on regional mapping projects;
Program detailed Geolog algorithms in aid of projects;
Peripheral support roles to the Team’s Reservoir Engineers for generating pay and K x H calculations;
Maintaining a current spreadsheet with well bore parameters for all wells drilled;
Providing some mentorship of Geology, Geophysics and Reservoir Engineering staff in the use of petrophysical techniques;
Maintaining a strong link and actively participating in the Canadian division’s Technical Excellence Group, the global Petrophysical users’ network and the Subsurface Technology Group in Houston; and
Involvement with operations Petrophysicists in designing logging programs in invert mud systems, maintaining quality control on new wells, and reviewing logs with the asset team geologists and geophysicists to recommend potential completion targets.

Note: Preference will be given to local candidates.



Basic/Required Qualifications

Minimum of 5 years petrophysical interpretation experience, predominantly in clastic reservoirs;
Strong organizational and communication skills;
Self-starter with demonstrated ability to balance multiple projects at the same time;
Demonstrated understanding of conventional and special core analysis, cuttings descriptions, mudlogs and petrographic data; and
Legally authorized to work in Canada on a regular full-time basis without restrictions.
Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience with Geolog software would be a definite asset.
Experience in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin is preferred.
