MLIS Admission Requirements
Admission Requirements
As space is limited, it is strongly suggested that application to the MLIS program at GSLIS be made as early as possible.

There are four requirements in order to be admitted to the Master of Library and Information Studies degree:

Applicants must have a bachelor's degree from a recognized university. Academic standing of at least a B, or second class, upper division, or CPGA of 3.0 out of 4.0 is normally required.
The School will take into account the character of the applicants' undergraduate studies and their suitability for a career in library and information services.

Courses in library and/or information studies taken before or as part of a B.A., or such courses taken in a school with a program not accredited by the American Library Association, cannot be accepted either as fulfilling the entrance requirement or as credit toward the McGill MLIS.

Applicants with a Bachelor's degree completed solely or primarily in a language other than English or French are required to submit documented proof of competency in oral and written English prior to admission.

Such proof normally comprises the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 600 (paper-based test) or 250 (computer-based test), with a written score of at least 5.0 for either test, 100 (IBT Internet based TOEFL) with a written score of at least 25 and a reading, speaking, and listening score of not less than 20, or the International English Language testing System (IELTS) with a minimum overall band score of 7.5
Applicants whose mother tongue is not English may be asked to demonstrate an English-language competency beyond the submission of the TOEFL or IELTS scores.

Competency in the use of computers is expected. GSLIS uses Windows 95/98/Me/2000/XP based operating systems on a Novell network. It is essential that students be familiar with file management and the Microsoft Office 2003 suite, especially Word 2003, PowerPoint 2003, Excel 2003 and Access 2003. It is also desirable that students be familiar with computer programming and statistics.

Previous library experience, while not essential, will be given consideration in assessing an application but cannot replace academic requirements.

Application Procedures
All applicants must submit, or arrange for the submission of, the following documents, directly to the School:

A completed application form. Application may be made:

Online at the main McGill Web site:

By e-mailing GSLIS at gslis@mcgill.ca directly if the above option is not possible. The School will mail you a form or send an e-mail attachment of the form.

If you cannot apply online or do not have an e-mail account please request an application form by writing to:

Graduate School of Library and Information Studies
McGill University
3459 McTavish Street, MS57-F
Montreal, Quebec H3A 1Y1
Canada

Two sets of official transcripts of the applicant's university record(s).

These transcripts must indicate degree awarded. If credits were transferred from a different institution then original transcripts must also be obtained from that source also.

When degree completion is expected in Spring of the application year then original transcripts showing courses and grades up to the last term of study should be submitted. Thereafter, the final transcripts must be sent when available.

If the file is reviewed without the final transcripts there will be a condition of acceptance on the official decision form that must be completed.

Students who have acquired a McGill degree do not have to submit official transcripts.

A non-refundable application fee of of $80 Canadian or US funds. There are no exceptions even if you have applied to another McGill department in the same year. This application fee is non-refundable.

The fee may be submitted by:

certified personal cheque in Canadian dollars drawn on a Canadian bank.

certified personal cheques in U.S. dollars drawn on a U.S. bank.

Canadian dollar money order.

U.S. dollar money order.

a bank draft in Canadian dollars drawn on a Canadian bank.

a bank draft in U.S. dollars drawn on a U.S. bank.

credit card ( mandatory if you submit an electronic application).

Cash and personal cheques will not be accepted - they will be returned and the file left unprocessed until an acceptable method of payment is received.

A non-refundable deposit of $200 is required for the MLIS program. Applicants must access Minerva within 30 days of the specified deadline to confirm acceptance and pay the deposit.

Payment is to be made by credit card. The $200 will be credited towards the tuition.

If the payment is not received within the specified deadline, the acceptance will be rescinded. The deposit will be forfeited if the student does not start the MLIS program.

A curriculum vitae.

Two academic letters of recommendation, on letterhead, or if the degree was awarded more than five years ago, two employer letters of recommendation.

A covering letter outlining the reasons for wishing to undertake the program of study.

Documented proof of competency in oral or written English (as in Admission Requirements above.)

Acceptance Confirmation - Fee Deposit - Deferrals
Confirmation of Offer of Acceptance
After receiving the official decision of acceptance from the Office of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Studies, students must access Minerva and confirm that they will be attending the MLIS program by the date indicated in the letter from GSLIS.

If confirmation is not received by the date indicated, the offer of acceptance will be rescinded and the student's file archived.

Confirmation of Fee Deposit
When students access Minerva to confirm acceptance into the MLIS program, a deposit of CDN $200 is required and is payable by credit card. This amount will be credited towards the student's tuition statement upon registration for courses. In certain circumstances, the deposit may be paid by certified cheque or money order through special arrangements with the GSLIS office.

Confirmation will only be accepted after the deposit has been received.

Students who do not register for courses or who withdraw their application, after acceptance confirmation and payment of deposit, will forfeit their deposit.

Deferrals
Students who request a one year deferral after acceptance confirmation and payment of the deposit will have their deposit held in trust until the next entry date. If acceptance is not confirmed on Minerva for that new date, the deposit will be forfeited.

Application Deadlines
September 2007 Entry: April 1, 2007 (Canadian applicants)
