The rebates are flowing as auto makers bid to keep Canadians buying vehicles here, boost year-end sales and counter the GST cut coming in January.
Two more auto makers joined the parade that was started last month by BMW Canada Inc., which was the first firm to offer incentives to cash buyers to persuade them to buy vehicles in Canada.
The price gap between vehicles sold here and those sold in the United States has been a sore point in recent weeks among consumers and car dealers who feared Canadians were flooding south to buy cars or at best, putting off their purchases until vehicle makers lowered prices in Canada.
Honda Canada Inc. will offer incentives of as much as $5,500 to people who pay cash for a Pilot crossover utility vehicle, $1,500 to buyers of the compact Civic and up to $4,000 on some models of Accord. Ford Motor Co. of Canada Ltd. is offering $1,250 rebates on most models, as much as another $7,000 on some and a one-percentage-point reduction in the GST.
There are several reasons for the Honda program, including the U.S. pricing issue, senior vice-president Jim Miller said.
In addition, October was a sluggish month for sales and the experience with the previous GST cut was that Canadians put off vehicle purchases until the tax cut was in effect, Mr. Miller said. The GST will be cut to 5 per cent on Jan. 1. “A lot of people do seem to be waiting.”
Canadian units of the Detroit Three all regained market share, including Ford, which said the manufacturers suggested retail price for the 2008 F-250 Super Duty pickup will fall to $24,499 from $28,999.
“We hear what people are saying – they prefer to purchase in Canada,” Ford Canada president Bill Osborne said.
