Listen
Voice 1

Hello. I’m Elizabeth Lickiss.

Voice 2

And I’m Liz Waid. Welcome to Spotlight. This programme uses a special English method of broadcasting. It is easier for people to understand, no matter where in the world they live.

Voice 1

It was a cold winter’s day in England. I was fifteen [15] years old. I was riding my horse along the main road to a friend’s house. Suddenly the horse fell. She crashed to the ground. My leg was caught under her body. Cars carefully drove round us. But no one stopped to help. What could I do? I shouted, “Help!” Finally, a small boy, David, came to help. He was my ‘Good Samaritan’. He telephoned my parents. He encouraged my horse to stand again.

Voice 2

We often call people like David ‘Good Samaritans’. Good Samaritans are people who put the needs of other people before their own. They stop and help when others choose to pass by. The saying ‘Good Samaritan’ comes from a story in the Holy Bible.

Voice 1

A man was travelling alone. Suddenly some criminals attacked him. They robbed him and left him by the road. They injured him badly. A religious leader was walking along the road. He saw the man. But he did not stop to help him. He passed by. Other people did the same. But then a man from an enemy country came along. The enemy country was Samaria, so this man was a Samaritan. He was the only one who stopped and helped the injured victim. He took the man to a place of safety. He even paid for someone to look after the man until he was better.

Voice 2

So would you act like the Samaritan? Would you help someone who was injured and in need?

Tara McCartney is a young woman from Britain. She told her story in the London ‘Guardian’ newspaper. She wants people to think about how they act. She says that everyone likes to think that they would be Good Samaritans. But in truth, Tara believes that many of us would fail. Here is her story.

Voice 1

Tara was travelling on a bus in London. The bus had two levels. Tara was travelling on the lower level. It was about ten o’clock at night. Tara was tired. She was looking forward to going home. But then she heard shouting. It was coming from the top level of the bus. It was a woman’s voice. She was shouting, ‘What is he doing, oh please make him stop, make him stop!’

There were many people on the bus. Everyone heard the shouts. But no one did anything. Tara also just sat and waited. Then the bus stopped. A young man came down from the top level, and got off the bus. He walked slowly towards the door. He looked behind him at the people. His eyes looked wide and strange.

Voice 2

Then the woman who had been shouting came down to the lower level. She said to everyone, ‘Did you see him? Did you see him? Then she shouted. ‘That man, he just stabbed my friend!’

Standing behind her was the victim. He looked shocked. He was in pain. He had knife wounds. But no one helped him. Tara said,

Voice 3

‘I did not want to be the first person to help. But then I looked around. Everyone was looking away. It seemed that no one was going to help the victim. So I went over to him and told him to sit down. But, as he reached the seat he suddenly fell down. His breathing was bad. I tried to support him but he was a big man. I called out to the people on the bus to help me. But everyone looked away. I could not believe it. The man was dying but no one cared’.

Voice 1

Tara called out for people to help several times. But they just left the bus and went away. They did not want to get involved. The man’s friend was in shock - she could not help. Tara said,

Voice 3

‘I was on my own, except for a very young girl. She helped me get his legs up onto a seat. I tried to talk to him - to keep him awake. He told me his name was Richard. This was the only thing that he said to me. We needed to keep him warm. So I took off my outer clothes - my jacket. I put it on him. I asked the young girl for her jacket. But our clothes did not keep Richard warm enough. Then a large man got on the bus. He had a warm jacket on. I asked him to give me his jacket to put over Richard. But he just said no.

Voice 1

At last the doctors arrived. They looked after Richard. They took him to hospital. There was nothing more that I could do for him. I was still in shock when the young girl, who had helped me, shouted, 'He’s got my clothes, my jacket. Now it is going to be ruined - I wish I had not given it to you. Why did you put it on him?'

I was just so sad. Richard needed help - did it matter that a jacket got ruined?’

Voice 2

Richard died on his way to the hospital. He was just twenty-eight [28] years old. The police asked everyone who had been on the bus to talk to them. They needed information so that they could find Richard’s killer. But only five passengers chose to help the police. One of these people was Tara. Another was the bus driver. Tara said,

Voice 3

‘I keep going over the event in my mind. I will never forget it. Why did no one help?’

Voice 1

Tara acted like the Good Samaritan in the Bible. She chose to help when other people simply walked away. Jesus told the story of the Good Samaritan to teach people that they should always show love for others. This was not easy for the Samaritan man in the Bible story. He had to overcome his feelings of not wanting to get involved.

Voice 2

The people on the bus were not enemies of Richard. But they let other issues get in the way of doing what was right. A Good Samaritan is a person who does not think of himself. He is concerned for other people and ready to help them. He will help whatever the cost. Being a Good Samaritan may not be easy. But it is the picture of human life that God wants us to follow.
