this is a public speech that my son wrote for the school. please give us some advice on what you think should be better.
(Hi, my name is Andy. Today I want to talk about what the school here is like and why we encourage you to attend our school.)
First I will introduce myself: I was born in china, I moved to Canada when I was ten. And Now I am 11, I'm going into grade six. Now I am going to move on to talking about what is the difference between the Canadian school and Chinese school, including homework, gym, and teachers.
My School in china is very hard, with piles and piles of homework that sometimes we have to finish until 11, 12’ 0 clock in the evening. Now I’m not saying I don’t like homework. They are helpful for my learning, but sometimes there are just too much extras that I don’t think is necessary. They take all of our free time away. Even in the summer holidays we will have to take three books of homework from Chinese, math and English home to do. One page per day for each subject, and they are hard! A lot of schools there just want to fill our brains with numbers, words and don’t give us a lot of activities to do. And the school that I attended didn’t have gym. We only have 45 minutes of free time outside, and its 1 class at a time so we didn’t have any playgrounds or sports fields. Then there were the teachers, they are strict and sometimes will yell at you or throw your homework on the floor if you didn’t do them well. They wish that every student is perfect and get the highest marks. Both teachers and students are very tired and in a hurry.
Now everything changed, we moved to a new country called Canada. The first day I went to school it was fantastic! The children didn’t ignore me just because I came from another country. They became friends with me. I had gym with them together. There is homework that is actually fun to do. But most of the time we just do some reading at home. I liked the playgrounds and the sports equipments. I learned to play baseball and hockey, but to tell you the truth; I still need to practice my skating techniques! Another thing that’s really good about the school here is that we could go on field trips; attend different clubs and sports teams. At that time even though I spoke poor English, The teachers listened to me, the School also had an ESL class to help me with the language. The teachers knew that I couldn’t speak or understand like the other kids, so they were patient with me and didn’t get mad at me when I broke the school’s rules. They also knew that no one is the same and everyone had different talents. I think that’s really important to know when you are in a new community and don’t know much about what’s around you.
Overall I don’t think that china is a disaster, it’s just that these 2 countries have different teaching strategies, and I just like Canada better. I think all of the reasons that I mentioned above are why I’m here today presenting this speech to all of you here. And as a new term is coming up, I will definitely look forward to grade 6, and it’s going to be an exiting year filled with a lot of fun and adventure as I continue to grow in the light of barrhead elementary school. And that’s what I’d like to share with you today.
