"President Bill Clinton's election in 1992 was a transfer of power from the old generation to the new generation -- he's the first baby boomer to be elected to the White House."

"Population growth has slowed down in the United States since the baby boomers became adults. They're simply not having as many children as their parents did."

  boom
  Market sales begin to boom.

为锻炼身体,一些上班族放弃了交通工具,加入walking commuters(走班族)的大军,但他们可不一定是cool carls(酷抠族,拥有高学历、较高收入,精打细算过日子的人群)。

为了追求个人发展,一些在国内已取得不俗业绩的人们毅然放弃工作,成为the flying fish(飞鱼族,指在国内已取得不俗成绩,但毅然放下一切,到国外名校求学的特殊中国群体)。

Flash mob refers to a large group of people who gather in a usually predetermined location, perform an unusual action for a brief time, and then quickly disperse.

Organizing a "flash mob" basically involves e-mailing a bunch of people with instructions to show up at a certain place for a few moments, then disappear. To protect the planned serendipity of each event, participants aren't told exactly what the mob is supposed to do until just before the event happens.

Quirkyalone is a neologism referring to someone who enjoys being single (but is not opposed to being in a relationship) and generally prefers to be alone rather than dating for the sake of being in a couple. International Quirkyalone Day is February 14, it started in 2003 as a "celebration of romance, freedom and individuality".

For the quirkyalone, there is no patience for dating just for the sake of not being alone. On a fine but by no means transcendent date they dream of going home to watch television. They would prefer to be alone with their own thoughts than with a less than perfect fit. They are almost constitutionally incapable of casual relationships.

A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases produced to directly and indirectly support human activities, usually expressed in equivalent tons of carbon dioxide (CO2). In other words: When you drive a car, the engine burns fuel which creates a certain amount of CO2, depending on its fuel consumption and the driving distance. When you buy food and goods, the production of the food and goods also emitted some quantities of CO2. Even if you heat your house with electricity, the generation of the electrical power may also have emitted a certain amount of CO2.

最新的research paper(研究报告)揭示,ghostwriter的target client(目标客户)不仅有学生,还有教授,以及workers from all walks of life(各行各业的工作人员),其中,academic paper(学术论文)属于要价较高的一种。除ghostwriting(代写)外,还有人会采取plagiarism(剽窃)等不正当手段完成论文。

He ad mitted that the thesis was ghostwritten(他承认这篇论文是找人代写的)。 He ghosts for a number of sports personalities who “write” newspaper columns(他给一些为报纸专栏“写”文章的体育界名人代笔).

Almost 1 million people Sunday sat China's national examination for 2010 admissions to the civil service. The exam, comprising tests of professional ability and language, was held in 44 cities throughout the country.

在上面的报道中,national examination for admissions to the civil service就是“国家公务员录用考试”,媒体多称为civil service exam,即“公务员考试”,有local(地方)和national(国家)之分。

There have been several examples recently in the London theatre of what show business calls cross-casting: men playing female roles or women men’s, the latter being much more common to offset the much larger proportion of male parts in plays.

"It doesn't pass the straight-face test to say pharmaceutical manufacturers are not emitting any of the compounds they're creating," said Kyla Bennett, who spent 10 years as an EPA enforcement officer before becoming an ecologist and environmental attorney.

A symbolic test used to determine whether something is legitimate or serious(用于确定某事是否真实或合理的测验)。

  我们经常用的keep a straight face意思是“一本正经、一脸严肃”,类似表达还有keep a poker face。 可是一般的人撒谎都没有办法keep a straight face或keep a poker face,所以他们也就没办法通过straight-face test。
