Dog and pony show
这个表演在英语中被称作dog and pony show。
Dog and pony show是个美国俚语,并非指真正的狗戏或马戏,而是比喻那些外表很炫、场面热闹、却没有多少实质内容的“盛大表演或演示”,商家常出此招以造声势,吸引人注意,达到宣传和推销产品的目的。
Dog and pony show的这一用法最早在1957年出现在报刊杂志中,但若要追根朔源,还得回到20世纪早期,那时,dog and pony show 是对小马戏团的马戏或狂欢节的蔑称。
Dog and pony show
My company asked me to do a dog and pony show about the new product in the exhibition next month.(公司让我下个月在博览会上做一个新产品的展示。)

You've got a cute dimple in your cheek.

He was on cloud nine after winning the marathon.(他赢了马拉松比赛之后,极度兴奋。)

When the two astronauts came into space by "shenzhou Ⅵ", many Chinese were on cloud nine.

Call someone on the carpet
He was called on the carpet last week for being late to work three times.

In order not to be called on the carpet, I have to be walking on the eggshell at work.
Toby may have given you these books, but don't start celebrating yet. He's famous for being an Indian giver.(托比可能把这几本书送给你了,但是不要高兴的太早。

Mind your P's and Q's

Egg on one's face
To have egg on one's face
有语源学家推测,to have egg on one's face的用法与从前的剧院演出有关。
因此,用to have egg on one's face来形容“尴尬”再贴切不过了!
例如:If I make a slip during the performance, I'll have egg all over my face(我表演时如果出错,那就尴尬了)。

It takes two to make a quarrel.

She says he led her astray, but it takes two to tango.(她说是他把她引入歧途,可是一个巴掌拍不响,双方都有责任。)

Jump the shark
Chinese has a saying of "dogslegs", while English has a "dogsbody". And it seems that they have a simliar meaning.

Ball of wax
Ball of wax
The whole ball of wax is to go shopping, have dinner and watch a film.(所有要干的事情就是购物、吃饭和看电影。)

His brilliant novel turned out to be a flash in the pan; he never wrote another one.(他的这篇极为出色的小说竟是昙花一现,再没有能写出第二篇来。)

Per se
Most people know very little about educational process per se.(大多数人对于教育工作的过程本身并不了解。)
The water wings is not, per se, an undesirable gift, but it is winter now, taking it as a gift seems not a good idea.(浮水圈,就其本身而言,是个不错的礼物,但是现在是冬天,用它作礼物似乎有点不合时宜。)

Cracked up to be
Oh, not it's cracked up to be. That is to say, it is not as good as advertised. 噢,明白了,原来cracked up to be是一个约定俗成的说法,意思是generally believed to be or regarded as being(被吹捧)。
Don't pour hot water into the glass or it will crack.(不要把热水倒进玻璃杯里,不然它会炸的。)

A lame duck manager cannot bring his business back on to the normal track.(一个无能的经理无法把他的企业重新拉回正常经营轨道上去。)The Water Planet, another lame duck, is to have further help from the government.(水厂是另一个难以经营的企业,需要政府的进一步扶持。)
