terribly sorry not to post in the same place, and i will continue my thinking.
can we say that one of our chinese people's characters is 'sef-depreciation', or simply 'feeling inferior to other people, esp. western people'?
try to think about it: in our daily life, are we usually be kinder and nicer with occidental than with our own people in china? in our law, we give a lot of financial and administrative advantages to occidentals than to our own people. say, a businessman from shanghai who wants to invest in china costal area benefits nothing, but a foreign company or individuals, if investing there, they will get a basket of advantages. so this will become much tougher for our own entreprises. thanks to WTO, china will engage to abide by the national treatment principle. it's a little bit ironical, u know, this principle is usually beneficial to westerners, for they don't enjoy the same treatment than their national counterparts when they invest, such as in india and some south american countries. but in china, westerners don't want this, for they fear we chinese will enjoy the same treatment than theirs.
perhaps u will say that it's globalisation, man, the same story happens in every corner. because the culture is a concept that big, u even can say u immigrate to canada because u don't want to live in china, and u don't like chinese working culture, interpersonal culture, strict seniority culture... u know, everything relative to one humain people, is sth. about culture.
again, i find this topic is just so vast and profound...
why we chinese feel like this way? is there anything wrong with our five-thousand years' culture and civilization? why some people say that we just have no culture in china now? or china a cultureless desert? for my personal pride in chinese culture, esp. in chinese four classics, poems, and proses, i will never agree with them, except they mean considering of a specific period of chinese culture., such ' chinese culture revolution.'
i feel i'm lost in my chinese culture, just like my contrymen of the same age. why? for i have never read through the four classics, works of SI MAJIAN,YU YUAN, don't mention DAO DEJIN of lao zi. this makes me so sad, for my elder brother who is 29 years old always advises me of reading them all.
i want ask all of u: have u ever learned them in school? i know the answer.
when i was young,i had no chance. and when i'm adult, i'm just too busy. and i even find i have not a good mastery of ancient chinese knowledge to understand the LUN YU de confucius, so i have to read the english translation.
i just envy the people who is born before 1949, for they have got the chance.
i guess, for most of chinese immigrants, that the shared dream, is to learn the good things of western culture and abandon the bad parts of our own culture.
to put it simply ( perhaps too simply here), we need to grasp the two books, one is our own, LUN YU; the other is the Bible. and i bet u will benefit a lot from them, and u start to respect others, not only ' don't do the things to others which you yourself don't want them.', (Confucius) but furtherly ' do the things to others which you yourself will be pleased to get them'.(Jesus Christ).
