IBM volunteer
Every day, there are 41,000 children under the age of 18 in Travis County who do not have enough food due a lack of financial resources. In Texas, nearly one in five adults go hungry each day. 56% of Austin Independent School District students are eligible for free or reduced lunch. At IBM, we do not often encounter the human face of hunger which exists in our community.
Austin continues to have the highest cost of living in the state of Texas. The annual income needed for a Travis County family of four to afford to live in the Austin area is $44,000. That's 233% above the Federal poverty level. And it's not getting any better - the skyrocketing gas prices are having a huge impact. The Capital Area Food Bank expects to pay nearly $78,000 more for gas this year than it did in 2005. That's almost 400,000 meals that will be sacrificed due to fuel prices.
Lorraine Herger, Director of the Austin Research Laboratory, decided it was time for lab employees to do their part and give back to the community. On Friday July 14th, Austin Research Lab Employees donated half a day of their time to volunteer at the Capital Area Food Bank. The team worked in the "Food Recovery" area. Tasks included inspecting, cleaning, sorting, weighing, and crating food. "It was a great team building experience" commented one lab employee. Another stated "this was a real eye-opener, I'll gladly do this again - people really need our help."
The tangible results of the effort amounted to the lab processing 5,200 pounds of food, equivalent to 4,160 meals. In addition, employees also donated 220 pounds of food to the food bank, which will provide 176 meals.
As a token of appreciation, the Capital Area Food Bank presented ARL with a certificate for outstanding volunteerism. Alison Cox, Volunteer Services Coordinator, added "we enjoyed teaching everyone about the Capital Area Food Bank and were glad to have the extra help in the fight against hunger in Central Texas. I look forward to working with you and IBM on future projects."
