Top 10 2006 4WD Vehicles for Off-Highway Use

To access some of the most enjoyable outdoor activities America has to offer, one sometimes has to travel into remote areas of state or national parks. Frequently, these areas can be reached only by traveling on rock-strewn trails that wind steeply up hills or mountains. In cases like this, it's important to have a vehicle that doesn't get jittery at the first sight of dirt. To help consumers choose, we selected a diverse group of 2006 model-year pickups and SUVs that we feel are the most capable over rough terrain and made recommendations as to how to equip them for maximum performance. Please note that the order of this list is alphabetical and does not represent an editorial preference of any one vehicle over another.

Porsche Carrera GT : 2006-09-22#2
1. Dodge Ram 2500:

On its own, the Dodge Ram doesn't possess many inherent qualities that make it more capable than its competitors like the Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-150, Nissan Titan or Toyota Tundra. However, there is a version of the Ram, the Power Wagon, that allows the Ram to make our list. The Power Wagon is a Ram 2500 with plenty of special off-roading hardware, including front and rear differential locks, an electronically disconnecting front stabilizer bar, 33-inch off-road tires, Bilstein shocks and a 12,000-pound winch.

Porsche Carrera GT : 2006-09-22#3
2. Hummer H1 Alpha:

The Hummer H1 Alpha is a pretty lousy vehicle by most measures. It's heavy, unwieldy and slow. Want to carry stuff? More cargo volume can be found in a Chevrolet Equinox. Price? If you have to ask, you can't afford it. Where the H1 is unmatched, however, is in its ability to neutralize obstacles in wide-open terrain. Featuring massive ground clearance, big tires and a stout drivetrain, the H1 Alpha can crawl over or ford its way through just about anything. Order the Off-Road Adventure and Tire packages for top performance.

Porsche Carrera GT : 2006-09-22#4
3. Hummer H2:

Welcome to Hummer Lite. The Hummer H2 isn't as big or as heavy as the Hummer H1, nor does it have as much off-road capability. But the H2's smaller size makes it much more realistic to use in urban environments, and it still has more than enough tough-truck attitude to take on the majority of off-road trails. Either the regular H2 or the H2 SUT (which features an open cargo bed) will do. Order the optional rear air-suspension feature to slightly improve the H2's capabilities.

Porsche Carrera GT : 2006-09-22#5
4. Jeep Grand Cherokee:

For overall versatility, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is an outstanding choice. This midsize SUV deftly offers plenty of off-road capability without sacrificing too much on-road comfort. In terms of size, the Grand Cherokee is just about right: It's big enough to provide adequate cargo room but still compact enough to make off-road navigation easy. The best performing Grand Cherokee of the range is one with the 5.7-liter V8 engine and the Quadra-Drive four-wheel-drive system.

Porsche Carrera GT : 2006-09-22#6
5. Jeep Wrangler:

This classic American SUV has earned a loyal following because of its rugged capabilities, compact size and iconic styling. Of course, it's not very civilized and is a poor choice for an urban commuter car. But for the ultimate in rock crawling and trail maneuverability, the Jeep Wrangler can't be beat. Our choice for 2006 is the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, which has, among other items, stronger axles, front and rear differential locks, a 4:1 low-range transfer case and off-road tires.

Porsche Carrera GT : 2006-09-22#7
6. Kia Sorento:

Compared to the Hummer H1 Alpha, which is just as likely to squash an obstacle rather than go over it, the Kia Sorento might seem a bit outclassed for this list. But for the money, this midsize SUV is an attractive package. It has enough truck DNA in it, including a body-on-frame design, a standard V6 engine, a solid rear axle and sufficiently meaty tires, to make it decently capable when the pavement ends. Best of all, a four-wheel-drive Sorento can be had for a tad over $20,000.

Porsche Carrera GT : 2006-09-22#8
7. Land Rover Range Rover:

Like the Toyota Land Cruiser, the Land Rover Range Rover has a rich heritage relating to off-road adventure. One could argue that the Range Rover has become overly posh in recent years. Indeed, it's unlikely that many owners will be thrashing their new 2006 Range Rovers over boulder-strewn trails. But there's no denying that the Range Rover, given its long list of off-road-oriented technology features, is still one of the most capable SUVs available for taking on nature's muck and grime.

Porsche Carrera GT : 2006-09-22#9
8. Nissan Xterra:

In the six years since its introduction, the Nissan Xterra has lived up to its marketing tagline of "Everything you need, nothing you don't." Rugged construction, a powerful V6 and plenty of versatility are in the Xterra's repertoire. Common automotive frills, like leather seating or GPS navigation, are not. For maximum off-road capability, go with the Off-Road trim level, which equips the Xterra with a rear differential lock, specialized tires, Bilstein performance shocks and hill descent control.

Porsche Carrera GT : 2006-09-22#10
9. Toyota Land Cruiser:

The Toyota Land Cruiser has rightfully earned its place as one of the world's premier go-anywhere vehicles. Used in just about every rugged environment on Earth, the Land Cruiser has a strong reputation for durability, versatility and comfort. It's a do-all SUV that's equally at home on city streets or unimproved mountain roads. Most of the Land Cruiser's off-road-oriented equipment comes standard, though there is an optional four-wheel height control system that can improve off-road performance.

Porsche Carrera GT : 2006-09-22#11
10. Toyota Tacoma:

Though old, beat-up American full-size pickups are still the weapon of choice for most hard-core off-roading enthusiasts, Toyota pickups have earned a measure of respect because of their capability and durability. The midsize Toyota Tacoma, now in its second generation, continues the trend. For off-road use, the Tacoma can be equipped with a package that includes a tuned off-road suspension, Bilstein shocks, special tires, a rear differential lock and an underbody skid plate.

福柯斯排行榜:2006年度Top 10 SUVs for Off-roading (Forbes)(ZT)

1. 2006 Hummer H1 Alpha

MSRP: $125,160
Angle of approach/departure: 72/38 degrees
Ground clearance: 16 inches
Turning radius: 26.5 feet

Designed for crawling along open, varied terrain, the Hummer H1 Alpha represents the off-road ideal. The H1 can

cross streams up to 30 inches deep and climb a short ramp an incredible 72 degrees upward when necessary. Its ground

clearance is better than any other new utility vehicle, but maneuvering around trees or obstacles on a normal off-

road trail can be frustrating. Its driving manners are far more truck-like than any other SUV on the road; there’s

not much in the way of comfort, and performance from the 300-hp turbo diesel V8 might be good for off-road

situations, but it’s barely adequate for bringing 8,000 pounds up to speed. And then where do you park?

Porsche Carrera GT : 2006-09-23#42
2.2006 Hummer H2

MSRP: $53,035
Angle of approach/departure: 41/40 degrees
Ground clearance: 9.9 inches
Turning radius: 21.7 feet

While the Hummer H1 was built for specialized duty with the armed services, the H2 was built on the reputation of

the H1. Finesse isn’t the keyword when describing the heavy H2, but it certainly is capable of maneuvering through

some tough situations that would block out other SUVs completely. With massive tires and very little in the way of

overhangs, the H2 can climb or descend from a 40-degree angle and ford through water up to 20 inches deep. But if

you do plan to take the H2 off-road, you should be aware that its sheer size makes the going tough, as does its huge

turning radius.

That translates to the streets, as well, where the H2 is one of the most cumbersome vehicles to maneuver and park.

The H2 isn’t as roomy as the outward dimensions might indicate, either, but it’s quite comfortable inside and as

refined as other big SUVs. If you’re willing to live with the compromises, along with its image as a poster child

for needless consumerism, the H2 is one of the best off-road devices available.

Porsche Carrera GT : 2006-09-23#43
3. 2006 Mitsubishi Montero

MSRP: $36,159
Angle of approach/departure: 39/18 degrees
Ground clearance: 8.6 inches
Turning radius: 18.7 feet

The Montero’s silhouette, with its tall proportions and short overhangs, speaks to off-roaders, as does its very

upright, truck-like driving position. The ability is there, too, with serious off-road hardware built in, like an

on-demand locking center differential, low-range transfer case and skid plates, along with a stability control

system that assists off-road as well as on. While the Montero boasts impressive specs for off-roading, including a

tight turning radius, it doesn’t handle as nimbly as other modern SUVs on the road, nor is its ride as supple as

most.

It’s a very capable and comfortable SUV, but the last of a breed Mitsubishi plans to discontinue the Montero in

the U.S. at the end of the year with no plans for a replacement.

Porsche Carrera GT : 2006-09-23#44
4. 2006 Land Rover LR3

MSRP: $38,285
Angle of approach/departure: 37/30 degrees
Ground clearance: 9.5 inches
Turning radius: 18.8 feet

For 2005, the very distinctive LR3 replaced the rugged-looking Discovery, a model that boasted impressive off-road

ability but wasn’t nearly as desirable for on-road journeys. Thanks to an all-new design that incorporates a

sophisticated system called Terrain Response, the LR3 is more capable both off-road and on. Terrain Response allows

the driver to select one of five modes for the type of terrain road, slippery, mud/ruts, sand or rock crawl and

the air suspension automatically adjusts ride height and ride stiffness to suit. In addition, engine and

transmission calibration is catered for the terrain, and traction control and hill-descent control help maintain

stability off-road. It handles much better on the road than its tall body might hint, too.

The interior is designed very well, with three rows of seating the third row with enough room for average-size

adults. If you don’t need the added seats for people, they fold down with the second row to yield a cavernous cargo

area.

Finally, what makes the LR3 especially alluring is its price. Starting at $38,285, it’s one of the best bargains on

our list.

Porsche Carrera GT : 2006-09-23#45
5.2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser

MSRP: $21,710
Angle of approach/departure: 34/30 degrees
Ground clearance: 9.6 inches
Turning radius: 20.9 feet

An off-roader that’s cute and macho at the same time? Unlikely. But the new 2007 FJ Cruiser is both. Borrowing just

the right amount of retro coolness from the old FJ Land Cruiser that helped establish Toyota’s global reputation in

the 1960s, the FJ Cruiser also packs modern sport utility running gear and clever packaging and features.

The interior isn’t very luxurious, but it’s comfortable, waterproof and easily cleaned up after romping in the mud.

The small, rear-hinged “suicide” door aids access to the tight backseat. Defying its cuteness, the FJ Cruiser is

serious when it comes to off-road capability; heavy-duty hardware includes protective skid plates, functionally

protective frame rails, a capable four-wheel-drive system with locking rear differential and an impressive amount of

wheel travel to help with off-roading. Despite the off-road prowess, it handles and performs well on the highway. It

’s not only one of the most eye-catching SUV designs out there this year, it’s a great value, too, at $21,710.

Porsche Carrera GT : 2006-09-23#46
6. 2006 Land Rover Range Rover

MSRP: $74,285
Angle of approach/departure: 34/27 degrees
Ground clearance: 8.9 inches
Turning radius: 18.8 feet

The first luxury SUV to be sold in the U.S. and, to some, the king of luxury off-roaders, the Range Rover has kept

up with the times with sophisticated technology and hardware that provides cushy, luxury-car comfort combined with

impressive clambering ability. The height-adjustable air suspension is similar to that in the LR3, with a multimode

Terrain Response system that allows extreme angles between wheels while helping to keep the cabin ride as level and

smooth as possible as the tires are scrambling over rocks or ruts.

If the base model’s 305-hp engine isn’t enough, there’s also a supercharged version that boosts power to 400 hp,

with stronger Brembo brakes to match. The wood-finished interior feels like a finely appointed private club; options

include a heated steering wheel and a DVD entertainment system.

Porsche Carrera GT : 2006-09-23#47
7.2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

MSRP: $27,165
Angle of approach/departure: 34/27 degrees
Ground clearance: 8 inches
Turning radius: 18.5 feet

Suburban people-mover or off-road runner? The Grand Cherokee can play either role depending on how it’s equipped. It

offers four different engines and three different four-wheel-drive systems. Top off-road guise includes the Quadra-

Drive II system, with electronic limited-slip differentials, allowing the power to effectively get to any wheel that

has more traction than the others.

Engines rate up to a 330-hp Hemi 5.7-liter V8 and even a 420-hp 6.1-liter version on the high-performance (though

more road-oriented) SRT8. With a manageable overall size and a tight turning radius, the Grand Cherokee is

maneuverable enough to take on smaller forest trails and fits where full-size SUVs won’t.

Porsche Carrera GT : 2006-09-23#48
8.2006 Land Rover Range Rover Sport

MSRP: $56,085
Angle of approach/departure: 37/30 degrees
Ground clearance: 6.8 inches
Turning radius: 19 feet

The Range Rover Sport might be Land Rover’s sportiest, most road-friendly SUV yet, but it’s certainly no slouch off

-road. Priced between the rugged LR3 and the ultra-luxurious Range Rover, the sleeker, more rakish Sport offers an

alternative to performance SUVs like the BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne, while still offering Land Rover off-road

levels.

The high-performance Sport has a 300-hp 4.4-liter V8, but the supercharged version wrings 390 hp for sport-sedan

performance, if you can get over sitting up so high. What’s surprising, given the on-road capabilities, is that the

Sport comes with nearly all of the off-road features and ability of its more rugged-looking siblings, including the

multimode air suspension and Terrain Response. Although the Range Rover might be more off-road focused, the Sport

actually boasts better approach and departure angles.

Unfortunately, the Sport brings less usable interior room than might be expected much less than the similarly

sized LR3 which is the price to pay for the attention-getting exterior design.

Porsche Carrera GT : 2006-09-23#49
9.2006 Lexus LX 470

MSRP: $67,295
Angle of approach/departure: 32/26 degrees
Ground clearance: 9.8 inches
Turning radius: 19.8 feet

The big, heavy, well-built LX 470 isn’t the type of vehicle you’d want to take for an afternoon of boulder-hopping,

but it’s the ideal choice for a long trip where the pavement doesn’t go. A more luxurious version of the legendary

Toyota Land Cruiser, the LX 470 doesn’t offer the on-road performance of many newer luxury SUVs of its size and

price, but it’s very smooth, refined and comfortable. It also offers top tech features, like an infrared-based Night

View system and Bluetooth compatibility.

On the downside, the conservative design is looking rather dated. But judging by how highly old Land Cruisers are

regarded today, it should stand the test of time.

Porsche Carrera GT : 2006-09-23#50
10.2006 Lexus GX 470

MSRP: $46,535
Angle of approach/departure: 31/29 degrees
Ground clearance: 8.6 inches
Turning radius: 18.7 feet

While the GX 470 is based on the less-expensive Toyota 4Runner, it offers more luxury and better off-road

performance than its sibling. Tough body-on-frame construction will hold strong for repeated off-road forays, while

an available Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) can change roll stiffness when needed. This provides the best

of both worlds more wheel movement for a smoother off-road ride and better traction, and tighter suspension

control for secure on-road handling. Downhill assist and hill-start assist features maintain control on steep slopes

while off-roading.

The GX 470 is richly finished inside with plush leather seats, bird’s eye maple trim and just about every feature

you might find in a high-end luxury car, including a powerful Mark Levinson audio system.
