linw : 2006-10-07#5

sannorm : 2006-11-09#10

sannorm : 2006-11-09#11

1. MD degree is from Medical School. So they are doctors not Psychologists.

2. Many universities offer Program in Psychology even those without medical school.

3. "偶们教会的两个心理医生都是多大毕业的MD, 约个appointment要排六个月." doesn't indicate the job marketing is good for immigrants.

not so easy, if you look at the requirements:

Admission Requirements
The minimum requirements for admission to the graduate program are:
  • <LI class=MsoNormal>an appropriate four-year University of Toronto bachelor's degree, or its equivalent from a recognized university <LI class=MsoNormal>normally at least an A- (or first class standing) in the final two years of undergraduate study <LI class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN-BOTTOM: 12pt">competitive scores on each subtest of the general section of the Graduate Record Examination.

Graduate Record Examination information can be obtained directly from:

    Princeton, New Jersey
    08541- 6000
Web: www.gre.org <LI class=MsoNormal>the equivalent of at least 6 full courses (12 semester courses) in Psychology, including statistics and some laboratory experience Note: Students may be admissible with fewer than 12 semester courses in Psychology. Students with a strong background in mathematics, physical science, biological science or computer science are especially encouraged to apply even if they have fewer than the suggested number of psychology courses
  • If your primary language is not English and you graduated from a non-Canadian university where the language of instruction is not English, then you must demonstrate your facility in English by completing one of the tests listed below. This requirement should be met at the time you submit your application.
  • <LI class=MsoNormal>The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) - paper-based test, minimum score 580, with TWE (Test of Written English), minimum score 5.0 - computer-based test, minimum score 237, with Essay Rating, minimum score 5.0.

  • The U of T School of Continuing Studies Academic Preparation Course (600 level), minimum grade of B
Because the number of applicants always exceeds the number of available places, meeting these requirements does not guarantee admission.
Applicants interested only in a Masters degree should not apply; all programs of study are intended to lead to the doctoral degree in psychology. Successful applicants are admitted to a one-year M.A. program; assuming satisfactory performance, students then continue on to the Ph.D. program. Applicants with an M.A. in Psychology from another university may be admitted directly to the Ph.D. program. The departmental admissions committee makes recommendations to the School of Graduate Studies based on the documentation specified below.
A COMPLETED APPLICATION MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE OFFICE OF THE DEPT. OF PSYCHOLOGY TOGETHER WITH THE REQUIRED SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS SUCH AS TRANSCRIPTS, REFERENCES, ACADEMIC INTEREST FORM AND OFFICIAL GRE SCORES BY JANUARY 15. INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.
Applicants will receive official notification of the outcome of their application from the School of Graduate Studies, usually about 1 April. However, successful applicants will receive a letter from the department confirming financial arrangements and will usually also receive a telephone call some time in March. Successful applicants must inform the department in writing by April 15 whether they wish to accept or reject the offer of admission and financial support. Those accepting are expected to arrive on campus no later than the first week in September.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES

So called good job market (see below in red color) ----You must think about it if you are qualified to teach in Harvard, McGill,...

The Psychology Department at U of T is the oldest in North America, having been established by J. Mark Baldwin, the noted developmental psychologist, in 1891. The focus of the entire department has always been research, for which it is highly regarded. Although there is no general clinical program, links to research hospitals and research institutes (e.g., the Addiction Research Foundation, the Clarke Institute of Psychiatry, the Institute of Child Study, and the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education) - as well as to other university departments - provide opportunities for students to engage in clinical and applied research.
The faculty, about 60 regular faculty and 20 cross-appointed faculty, are internationally recognized for their research scholarship. Their areas of expertise cover all of the major areas of research in psychology. At present, there are about 70 students in the graduate psychology program, with about 15-25 new students admitted annually. Our students are the very best, coming from premier undergraduate programs around the world. Once here, they join a close-knit group of researchers. When they leave, they are highly competitive on the job market, with recent graduates on faculty at Harvard, Yale, McGill, the University of British Columbia, and the University of Illinois, to name only a few.
The department provides excellent research facilities. The entire department is linked to the university computer system by our own SGI computer, with numerous IBM-compatible and Macintosh microcomputers in departmental space and in individual labs. Well equipped labs in all major areas of psychology are readily available to students. There is a full-time shop for the construction of research apparatus from simple boxes to complex electronic devices. With established ties to hospitals in the city, access to patient populations is facilitated. In all, the Department of Psychology is a great place to do research.

The department of Psychology in U. of Toronto never provided MD degree and has no authority to provide MD degree. In addition, this department doesn't offer clinical psychology program that means the graduate must get extra credits from other program if he or she wants to be a clinical psychologst.

Please provide correct information.

The Graduate Program in Psychology
Because the goal of the U of T graduate program in psychology is to educate researchers, course load is kept quite light to permit plenty of time for carrying out research. Most of the course work is concentrated in the M.A. year.
The M.A. Program
In the M.A. year, students must complete the following four courses:
  1. Directed Studies (first term, to prepare for the M.A. thesis research);
  2. Design of Experiments I (first term, experimental design and statistics);
  3. Three half-courses in the department
The only other requirement in the M.A. year is completion of the M.A. research project and submission of the M.A. thesis at the end of the M.A. year.
The Ph.D. Program
Assuming adequate performance, students normally proceed to the Ph.D. program after their M.A. year.
In the first Ph.D. year (Ph.D. 1), students must complete the following courses:
  1. Professional Psychology (second term);
  2. Project course. This is a one-term research project course spread out over the full year. The project supervisor must be a faculty member other than the student’s Ph.D. supervisor.
  3. Two additional courses in the department;
  4. One additional course in statistics may be taken this year of in later years;
Students admitted with an M.A. from another university may be exempted from the Project course in Ph.D. 1. However, these students will normally be required to take Design of Experiments I and Strategies and Methods in addition to the other Ph.D. requirements.
In Ph.D. 2, students must complete a one-term course spread out over the full year leading to a formal proposal for doctoral research and requiring an examination in the student’s area of specialization.
In addition to these course requirements, students are expected to complete an additional four half-courses in the department within the first two Ph.D. years. Of the 6 unspecified half-courses completed during the M.A. and Ph.D. years, at least two must be in an area of Psychology outside the student’s area of specialization. Each area group may have additional requirements regarding which courses students must complete.
Of course, students are encouraged to take other courses as they and their supervisors see fit, but the majority of time in Ph.D. years is spent conducting research.
Research Groups
All areas of the department meet regularly, with programs of internal and external speakers. As just two examples, the Ebbinghaus Empire (perception, memory and cognition) has met on Wednesdays at noon for over a quarter of a century; the Friday afternoon meetings of the Animal Behavior Research Group have been going on almost as long. These informal gatherings reflect the strong research emphasis of the department (as well as the small number of formal courses required). Graduate students are expected to attend the research group in their area of specialization and to present their own work periodically. Everyone is encouraged to attend other research groups as well.
The Department also presents a regular colloquium series on Wednesdays at 4 pm, typically alternating speakers from other universities with in-house speakers. This is followed by a gathering in the departmental lounge to chat over snacks, wine, and beer, after which groups form to go out to dinner. Indeed, social gatherings are frequent, including the traditional Christmas parties, a summer picnic, softball and volleyball games, and the like.

ILP : 2006-11-13#28
那么,MSW(master of social work)就业又如何呢?

http://www.ala.org/ala/education/educationcareers.htm

sannorm : 2006-11-13#37

please checkout this websitehttp://www.cla.ca/careers/careeropp.htm
you will have the overview of this job market.

CLA will tell you in the coming years (3-5ys), thare are more than 60% senior librarians in Canada being retired. That's the reason why this is a good market. Systems and Digital positions are more competitive than other regular librarian positions.

sannorm : 2006-11-14#43

sannorm : 2006-11-14#44

Foreign Language Instructors

Work Schedule: Full Time
Salary: $49,397 - $70,558
Location: Washington, DC metropolitan area

Foreign Language Skills Are Essential to CIA's Mission

The Central Intelligence Agency is hiring qualified and experienced Language Instructors of Arabic, Chinese/Mandarin, Dari/Pashtu, French, German, Greek, Indonesian, Japanese, Persian (Farsi), Russian, Serbo-Croatian, Thai, and Turkish to work in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

The CIA provides first-class training for energetic, creative and committed intelligence professionals. CIA Language Instructors deliver programs that provide students with the foreign language communications skills and cross-cultural awareness they need to live and work abroad effectively, or to perform other language-related duties. Foreign Language Instructors apply the latest instructional methodologies to meet highly customized student needs and conduct language proficiency testing in reading, speaking and understanding for skills evaluation. In addition, they may be asked to provide a variety of language support services worldwide.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minimum requirements include a Bachelor's in foreign language, linguistics or a related field; native fluency in the language; 2-5 years of teaching experience; demonstrated knowledge of the respective area's history, culture, politics and economy; and the ability to use the latest technology and teaching techniques. Also desired are experience in teaching language skills to a wide range of adult students, from beginners to those at a more advanced proficiency level, and experience in program and/or education management. As part of the screening and interview process, applicants will be required to take language proficiency tests in their native language. Advanced English proficiency is also required.

Salaries are based on the individual applicant's qualifications. In addition to base salary of $49,397 to $70,558, Language Instructors earn annual "bonus" pay ranging from $4,875 to $9,750, with the amount based on the language and their language proficiency. Language Instructors who speak multiple foreign languages may also qualify for additional bonuses in varying amounts. Furthermore, new employees can qualify for a lump-sum hiring bonus for languages, up to a maximum amount of $35,000.

All applicants must successfully complete a thorough medical and psychological exam, a polygraph interview and an extensive background investigation. U.S. citizenship is required.

To be considered suitable for Agency employment, applicants must generally not have used illegal drugs within the last twelve months. The issue of illegal drug use prior to twelve months ago is carefully evaluated during the medical and security processing.

Important Notice: You are interested in a position as an overt employee---which means you can acknowledge your affiliation with the Central Intelligence Agency. But should you? There may be friends, family, individuals or organizations who would be very interested to learn that you are an applicant for or an employee of the CIA. Their interest, however, may not be benign or in your best interest. You cannot control who they would tell. We therefore ask you to exercise discretion and good judgment in disclosing your interest in a position with the Agency.

MA programs

http://forum.iask.ca/A Master's degree in sociology can be achieved in two ways: by means of five courses and a thesis or by means of seven courses and a research paper. In the Social Studies of Medicine Joint MA Program, the course requirements are six courses plus a thesis or seven courses and a research paper.
Students should not be fooled by the lesser number of courses into imagining that the former of these options is the easier: to the contrary, it is likely to be more difficult and to take much more time. Although we wish this option to be available for students wishing to have early research experience, our expectation--that most students would choose the non-thesis route so as to progress in their career (and especially, for those so wishing, into the doctoral program) as fast as possible--has been borne out by the facts.

Residency and Time Required to Complete Degree

Students entering the Master's Program will be required to spend three terms in residence at McGill. The non-thesis program is designed to take one calendar year, with the length of time for the thesis program resting upon previous background and success in quickly developing a thesis topic. Candidates for the Master's degree must complete the degree within three years. It is important to note that in order to be considered full time, students in residence must register for a minimum of 12 credits per term in both the Thesis and Non-Thesis Programs. There is no residency requirement while the student is writing the thesis.

Admissions requirements
Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree with a standing equivalent to a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.3 or better out of a possible 4.0. The degree may be either in Sociology - in which case it should be equivalent to the Honours B.A. degree at McGill - or it may be in another revelant social science. In the latter case, applicants may be required to take some additional Sociology courses to fill gaps in their background.

The strength of an applicant's academic record is of primary importance in consideration of an applicant's dossier. For a detailed description of courses open to graduates and undergraduates, and of preparation required of McGill University honours students, candidates should consult the Undergraduate Programs Calendar via on the Web at http://www.mcgill.ca.

All applicants are asked to submit two letters of recommendation and two certified copies of their university-level grades along with an example of their written work. Applicants who have received a Master's degree at a university other than McGill should submit a copy of their thesis or evidence of equivalent research experience with their application for admission. The applicant's dossier must be completed by February 15th to be considered for the McGill Awards Competition and the internal Teaching Assistantship competition.

Applicants not registered at Canadian universities must submit with their applications the results of the Verbal and Quantitative aptitude tests of the Graduate Record Examination. Canadian students are also encouraged to submit the results of this test with their application. Arrangements to take the Graduate Record Examination should be made directly with the Educational Testing Service by visiting their website at http://www.gre.org/ttindex.html. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is also required of all non-Canadian students whose mother tongue is not English and who have not completed an undergraduate degree from a recognized institution where English is the language of instruction. The minimum acceptable score for the TOEFL exam is 580 on the paper-based test or 237 on the computer-based test. International students can also contact International Student Services at 514-398-4349 for more information, or visit their website, http://ww2.mcgill.ca/stuserv/iss/intlstud.htm.

Candidates who lack sufficient preparation in the social sciences, but whose academic record justifies consideration for eventual admission to the Master's graduate program, must register for a qualifying year during which they are required to take courses to broaden their knowledge of sociology. Candidates must achieve a final mark of at least a B in these courses and an average in ll courses of at least B+; in general, they must, in the opinion of the Department, have achieved sufficient preparation in the subject matter of sociology before they will be allowed to proceed with graduate work. All candidates are expected to have taken courses in statistics, research methods and sociological theory at the undergraduate level.

The program of study is designed to give students an advanced understanding of a major field in sociology, of current methods of sociological research, and of some principal theoretic issues in the discipline. Three terms of residence study is the minimum requirement for a Master's degree.

MA in Medical Sociology

The program is open to students with a social sciences, health professions or health sciences background. It is interdisciplinary in nature and includes required courses offered by both participating departments as well as a research thesis based on original research. For additional information concerning this program, please consult the Social Studies of Medicine website, http://www.mcgill.ca/ssom/.

sannorm : 2006-11-15#70

sannorm : 2006-11-15#71

How do I become an art librarian?

Subject knowledge in an art or design related area will stand you in good stead, but there are other useful skills, some of which will be helpful in any library-related post.

  • Familiarity with IT and word-processing packages
  • Keyboarding skills
  • Knowledge of one or more languages other than English
  • Pleasant and confident manner in dealing with the public

What are the job prospects like?

Art librarianship is a specialised area, where regular job opportunities occur. Professional posts will be advertised in Lisjobnet, the Guardian or the Museums Journal, and may have specific job titles, or general ones such as Curator or Curatorial Assistant. Starting salaries may be modest - as elsewhere in the profession - but opportunities for progression do exist and job satisfaction is potentially high.

What can I do to get a job in an art library?

Apart from waiting for jobs to come up, there are a few things that you can do to increase your chances of working in the sector.

Networking and professional involvement is a key way to make useful contacts and be aware of what's going on in the sector. The Library Association offers opportunities for professional involvement, but there are also other organisations relevant to the art libraries sector. In particular, the Art Libraries Society of the United Kingdom and Ireland (ARLIS) offers opportunities for professional involvement and organises courses and professional events for members.
Unpaid voluntary work or student placements can be undertaken to gain experience, which may lead to paid work. You should approach the librarians of individual institutions with a detailed CV and an outline of the time you would be prepared to donate, to see what opportunities are available. Voluntary work may take time to arrange for security reasons and will probably involve an interview.
Short term contracts may also be worth considering. Look out for advertised vacancies or contact recruitment agencies.

millisun@126.com
